GaTech Computer Science Masters

Note date: 2026-10-25

In 2025 I did what any self-respecting person does when they already have a busy full-time job, a partner, and little time. I started a masters degree. Specifically I started OMSCS (Online Master of Science in Computer Science), an online masters taught by Georgia Institute of Technology. Better known as Georgia Tech.

My reason for wanting to do the degree was, I think, a mixture of academic boredom and wanting to prove to myself that I could. I have been programming for over a decade and a half, but I didn't complete a traditional CS undergrad degree. I did a 'related' business informatics degree. I felt that, even though my programming skills were strong, that I may have missed some core fundamentals.

OMSCS was perfect for me. It is a online, taught, masters that can be completed (and is basically intended for) part-time. This has allowed me to work on it without quitting my current job as a software engineer.

Courses

These are the courses I've completed at GaTech so far:

  1. CS 6750 - Human Computer Interaction
  2. CS 6601 - Artificial Intelligence
  3. CS 7646 - Machine Learning for Trading
  4. CS 6250 - Computer Networks

Currently I plan on completing the "Artificial Intelligence" specialisation. Which basically just means you've taken a significant number of AI-related modules while completing the masters. This may change though as I progress through the course. You need to complete 10 modules to graduate, and with life's other demands, I probably won't complete that until sometime in 2028. So plenty of time to change my mind on what modules I want to do.

I plan to write up my thoughts and more detailed notes on my experience with each course. I've not got around to it yet though. I would also quite like to demonstrate or talk about some of the interesting things I've learned in each course, but I need to be careful that any writings do not cross the line into academic dishonesty (by publishing my solutions to coursework for example).
